Where it comes from

The story of Lambert

Germanic naming reused a small set of elements in almost every possible combination, and beorht was among the most-used second elements; a family could produce an Albert, a Herbert and a Lambert in three generations and the shared ending was the point. Saint Lambert of Maastricht, a seventh-century bishop murdered at Liege, made the name a fixture of the Low Countries, and it is still common in Belgium and the Netherlands. It reached United States records with German, Dutch and Belgian migration and had its best year in 1900. In Haiti and francophone West Africa it remains in current use.

Meaning

bright land, renowned in the land

From Germanic land, land or territory, and beorht, bright, famous or renowned. The second element is the same one in Albert, Robert, Herbert and Egbert, and its sense in a name is fame rather than illumination. The compound therefore means something like renowned across the country.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two settled Germanic elements and a documented seventh-century saint.
  • Bert is available as a completely ordinary short form.
  • Recognized across Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and France.
What to consider
  • In American ears it reads as an early-twentieth-century name.
  • French and English say it very differently.
  • It is close to Lambeth and Lamar and gets confused with both.
