Our story of Lamarion
Marion's American history is worth setting out, because it explains why this name is a boys' name at all. Marion was given to American boys steadily through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries — Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox of the Revolution, made the surname patriotic, and John Wayne was born Marion Morrison in 1907. It crossed to girls in the twentieth century and the boys' use collapsed. But the syllables stayed available to American naming, and the prefix system took them up: Lamarion, Damarion, Amarion and Jamarion all appear from the 1990s. Lamarion's peak in 2005 sits at the end of the prefix era, and it is Marion returned to boys by an entirely different road.
Meaningscholars disagree
The Marion element descends from a contested Mary
Marion is an Old French diminutive of Marie, from Hebrew Miryām, whose meaning is genuinely unsettled — bitter, beloved and rebellious have all been proposed. The La- prefix is an American naming element with no documented meaning, attested from the 1940s. The compound has no translatable sense of its own.
