The story of Lady
Title names were used in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century America in numbers that surprise modern readers: Queen, King, Prince, Duke, Earl, Major, Lady and Princess all appear in the birth records, and Earl was a top-hundred boys' name for decades. The practice was strongest in the American South and in African-American communities, where a title on a birth certificate guaranteed a form of address that public life frequently withheld. Lady faded after 1920 as the title-name fashion generally receded. It survives in Spanish-speaking countries as Leidy and Leydi, which are the same English word respelled to be readable in Spanish.
Meaning
the one who kneads the loaf
Old English hlaefdige joins hlaf, 'loaf', to a root meaning to knead — so the lady of a house was, originally and literally, the one who made the bread. Her male counterpart was hlaford, the loaf-keeper, which wore down to lord. Both words then rose steadily in social register until they named the aristocracy. The derivation is settled and appears in every standard reference; it is one of the clearest examples in English of a word climbing the social scale.

The trade-off
- It never needs to be spelled, because every English speaker already writes it.
- The Old English etymology is genuinely surprising and easy to tell.
- It guarantees a form of address that a bearer never has to ask for.
- It collides with an extremely common noun, in speech and on forms.
- Systems that expect a title field and a name field will handle it badly.
- It reads as a claim rather than a name to people meeting it for the first time.
