Kyree
Feminine · “Greek kyrie”

Some names entered the language because they were sung rather than spoken. Kyrie eleison is Greek, kept untranslated in the Latin mass for fifteen hundred years, and generations of congregations learned the word without knowing the language. Gloria, Hosanna, Alleluia and Selah arrived the same way: they are liturgical fragments that became names.

The story of Kyree
The Kyrie is a fossil. When the liturgy of the Western church moved from Greek to Latin in the fourth century, this one phrase was left in the original, and it has been sung in Greek in Latin churches ever since, by people who spoke neither. It has been set to music by Palestrina, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Verdi, so the word is one of the most recorded in European art. Its use as a personal name in the United States is recent and belongs mostly to boys; the female form is smaller and mostly follows the male one. Kyree peaks in 2014. The respelling with -ee does a specific job: Kyrie can be read as KEER-ee-ay, the liturgical pronunciation, or KY-ree, the American one, and the -ee spelling forces the second.
Meaning
Greek kyrie, Lord, in the phrase Lord have mercy
Kyrie is the address form of Greek kyrios, lord or master, and survives in the opening petition of the Christian liturgy, Kyrie eleison, Lord have mercy. This is the only Greek left in the Roman mass, retained when everything around it was translated into Latin. The spelling Kyree is an American respelling that regularises the ending; the underlying name in the United States is carried mainly by boys and is more often written Kyrie.

Pronouncing Kyree
KY-ree
Two syllables, stress on the first, in American use. The liturgical Greek is KEE-ree-eh, three syllables, and church musicians will say it that way. The -ee spelling exists to prevent that reading.

The Loreli test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kyree's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Loreli climbed just as high around 1952, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Loreli's path sketches the road Kyree is walking now.
Kyree sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
