Where it comes from

The story of Konstantinos

Constantine legalized Christianity, called the Council of Nicaea and refounded Byzantium as Constantinople in 330. In the Greek Orthodox world he and his mother Helena are saints, and the name has been among the most-used Greek men's names ever since. Its everyday Greek forms are Kostas and Dinos. It reaches American records with Greek emigration, usually shortened at once.

Meaning

steadfast, constant

From Latin constans, standing firm, on stare, to stand; Constantinus is the diminutive. The same root gives English constant, and the sense is about remaining rather than about frequency.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Latin meaning that is plain and easy to explain.
  • Kostas and Gus are both established short forms in two languages.
  • One of the most consequential figures in European history stands behind it.
What to consider
  • Twelve letters and four syllables is a great deal for any American form.
  • Americans will not attempt the full name and will use a short form from the start.
  • Konstantinos, Constantine and Konstantin are all in use and look quite different.
