The story of Hoyle
Hoyle taught whist to fashionable London for a guinea a lesson before he wrote it down, and the book made him far more money than the lessons had — it was pirated immediately, which is why the authorized editions carry his signature on every copy. He went on to write about backgammon, chess and piquet. The phrase outlived the games: whist has been replaced twice over, first by bridge and then by nothing much, and people who have never held a card still say according to Hoyle when they mean by the book.
Meaning
a dweller in a hollow
The surname is northern English and topographic: somebody who lived in a hollow or a depression in the ground, from a dialect form of the word hole. It is commonest in Yorkshire and Lancashire. As an American first name it appears at the start of the twentieth century, almost certainly as a surname moved to the front rather than out of any interest in card games.
