Where it comes from

The story of Kionna

When missionaries wrote Hawaiian down in the 1820s they used thirteen letters because that is how many sounds the language has, and the consequence for names was drastic. A borrowed name is not translated in Hawaiian; it is rebuilt, sound by sound, using only what the language allows. Elizabeth becomes Elikapeka. William becomes Wiliama. The rebuilt names are then completely ordinary Hawaiian words, which is why Keoni and Malia sound native and are. Kiana is Diana rebuilt that way, and it traveled back into mainland American use in the twentieth century as though it were a new name, which by then it effectively was. Kionna is one of the spellings that followed it.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Kionna has no established source. It is closest to Kiana, which in Hawaiian is the reshaped form of Diana, whose own Latin meaning is disputed. It is also reached as a modern American compound built from Ki- and the ending -onna. Neither has been shown, and the name does not carry a documented meaning.

Kionna sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1994, with 63 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kionna went to 8 girls in 2025, but Kiona and Kyonna are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 25, which makes it the 935th most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,982 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 64,291 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 200,908 for Kionna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Three open syllables and no consonant cluster anywhere in it.
  • Two short forms that sound nothing like each other.
  • Every sound in it is easy in English, Spanish and Hawaiian alike.
What to consider
  • Kiana, Keonna and Kianna are all in use, so the spelling will need giving.
  • There are two pronunciations in circulation and no way to tell them apart on paper.
  • No documented meaning attaches to this spelling, which is worth settling before a child asks.
