In 1929 Wolfgang Kohler showed people two shapes, one round and one spiky, and two invented words, and asked which was which. Almost everyone gave the spiky shape the sharp word. The experiment has been repeated across languages and cultures for ninety years with the same result, and the sharp word, in the modern version, is kiki.

Where it comes from

Our story of Kiki

Our reading is that Kiki is worth knowing for what it demonstrates rather than what it descends from. Sound symbolism is one of the few things linguistics can show experimentally: the shapes of words are not entirely arbitrary, and people across unrelated languages agree that certain sounds go with certain qualities. Sharp consonants and high front vowels read as small, bright and angular; round vowels and voiced consonants read as large and soft. That is the finding behind the kiki experiment, and it is one reason names that sound alike feel alike even when they are unrelated. Reduplication adds a second effect: doubling a syllable is what nearly every language does in baby talk, which is why reduplicated forms feel affectionate everywhere. Kiki is both at once, which is why it works as a nickname in a dozen languages and why it is unusual as a legal name.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Kiki is a reduplicated nickname rather than a name with an etymology. It serves as a short form for a very wide range of names in many languages, anything beginning with a k or hard c sound: Kristina, Katherine, Kyriaki, Kiara, Enrique. Where it is registered as a name in its own right, as in the American data peaking in 1975, it has no source beyond the sound.

Kiki sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1976, with 38 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.
