Kierstyn
Feminine · “Greek christos”
Christ and Messiah are the same word. Greek christos means anointed and it translates Hebrew mashiach, which also means anointed, so the two most loaded titles in the Christian vocabulary are one term in two languages. The story of Kierstyn
Anointing was a real ceremony before it was a metaphor. Kings and high priests in ancient Israel were consecrated by having oil poured on the head, and the anointed one meant the reigning king. The term acquired its future sense during and after the exile, when it came to describe an awaited figure who would restore the kingdom. Greek-speaking Jews translated mashiach as christos, and the early Christian movement used the Greek. English has both words, borrowed at different times by different routes, and treats them as though they meant different things. The metathesis in the Scandinavian form is a separate matter and a common one: sounds swap places readily, which is why English has bird from brid and third from thridda. Kirsten, Kristen and Kierstyn are all versions of one name with the r in various positions.
Meaning
Greek christos, anointed
Kierstyn is a respelling of Kirsten, the Scandinavian form of Christina, from Greek christiana, a Christian woman, from christos, anointed. The r and the vowel have swapped places at some point in the Scandinavian development, so Kristin became Kirsten. The Hebrew mashiach, from which messiah comes, means the same thing: one who has been anointed with oil, originally a king or a priest. It peaks in 2004.
