One vowel separates this from Janelle and the two point at different men. Gene comes from Eugene and Jan from John, so the same ending on two different fronts produces two names that rhyme, look almost identical, and descend from entirely unrelated sources.

Where it comes from

The story of Genelle

It takes a man's short form and puts a French feminine ending straight on to it, skipping the full name entirely. Eugenia and Eugenie both exist and are the orderly routes; this is not one of them. What it does instead is treat Gene — itself an American clipping — as though it were a stem in its own right, and apply to it the ending that French uses on Michel and Daniel. That is two steps removed from anything French would produce, and it is exactly how a great many American women's names of the period were made.

well-born, at one remove

If the front is Gene the Greek elements behind Eugene apply. If the family reached the spelling from Janelle instead, an entirely different Hebrew name stands behind it. The vowel does not settle the question for anyone who was not there.

Genelle sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1978, with 30 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Genelle sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The stress at the back gives it a decisive finish.
  • Elle and Nell both sit inside it as complete short forms.
  • The spelling follows the sound once the g is settled.
What to consider
  • The opening consonant is ambiguous and strangers will guess.
  • Janelle and Jenelle are both commoner and get substituted.
  • It is closely tied to the middle decades of the last century.
