The story of Kiernan
Irish monasticism developed differently from the continental kind: it was rural, organized around founder-saints and their successors, and unusually committed to books. Clonmacnoise, founded by Ciaran in 545 on a bend of the Shannon where the main east-west road crossed the river, became a center of learning, manuscript production and craft for six hundred years, and the annals, gospel books and metalwork produced in such houses are the reason so much early Irish history survives at all. Irish monks then traveled: Columbanus into Gaul and Italy, Aidan to Northumbria, others to Iceland. The name itself is a color word, ciar, dark, with two diminutive endings on it, so it means something like the little dark one.
