The story of Kiel
By late 1918 the German High Seas Fleet had spent most of the war in port. When the naval command ordered a final sortie in October, crews at Wilhelmshaven and then Kiel refused; the mutiny at Kiel on 3 November turned into a general rising, sailors' and workers' councils took the city, and within six days the movement had reached Munich and Berlin. The Kaiser abdicated on 9 November and the war ended two days later. The city's name comes from the narrow inlet it stands on, which is also, by a different route, what the Gaelic caol means in the Scottish name Kyle, so the American Kiel and the German Kiel arrive at the same spelling from unrelated words meaning much the same thing.

Gaelic caol, narrow
Kiel in American records is most plausibly a respelling of Kyle, from Gaelic caol, a narrow strait or channel. The German city Kiel, whose name refers to the fjord it sits on, is a separate word with the same spelling. The peak is 1983.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

Kiel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ignacio climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ignacio's path sketches the road Kiel is walking now.
Kiel sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
