Where it comes from

The story of Kenzi

The Mackenzies were one of the great Highland clans, holding Kintail and later Ross, and their name reached America with Scottish emigration. It moved into American given names in the 1980s, overwhelmingly for girls, and the short form Kenzie followed almost immediately. Kenzi, with the i, appears in the records as a complete registered name, part of the same fashion that gives Emri and Landri their endings.

Meaning

comely, handsome

From Scottish Gaelic Mac Coinnich, son of Coinneach, whose name is built on a word meaning comely or fair of form; the Mac at the front is the Gaelic word for son.

Kenzi sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2013, with 203 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kenzi went to 47 girls in 2025, but Kenzy is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 64, which makes it the 896th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,400 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 25,114 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 34,197 for Kenzi itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Gaelic meaning inherited from one of the great Highland clan names.
  • Five letters and two syllables, very quick to write.
  • Mackenzie stands behind it as a fuller formal option.
What to consider
  • Kenzie is the more common spelling and will be written for her regularly.
  • It reads as a nickname to some people, which may matter on a formal document.
  • The name it comes from literally means son of, which she will find out.
