The story of Kenner
German-speaking migration to America in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries brought a very large stock of occupational and descriptive surnames, and Kenner is among them. Minor Kenner, a nineteenth-century Louisiana planter, gave his name to the town of Kenner outside New Orleans, which is the best-known American use of the word. The given name follows the ordinary southern practice of promoting a family surname, and the American record shows it in small numbers with a peak in the 1940s. The Cincinnati toy company founded in 1947 took its name from the street it stood on, which was named for the same kind of family surname.

one who knows; an expert
German Kenner is an agent noun from kennen, 'to know', and means a connoisseur or a person with expert judgment — the same verb behind English ken and the Scots 'do you ken'. That is the likeliest source of the surname. A second route runs through the Irish and Scottish Kenner or Kinnear, and a third through place names. English surname reference works list more than one origin, which is normal for a short name of this shape.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Derward test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kenner's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Derward climbed just as high around 1921, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Derward's path sketches the road Kenner is walking now.
Kenner sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
