The letter C entered English from Latin, where it had been unambiguously k; Latin's own pronunciation shifted before front vowels, and French carried the split into English, which is why English has cat and cent, and why the same letter is read two ways. English kept K in reserve, and K is entirely regular: it is always the k sound. That regularity is the reason for the enormous K-respelling wave in American naming — Kaitlyn, Kristal, Kaleb, Kody, Kaysi — and it means the respellings are more phonetically honest than the originals, even where the original was never actually unclear.
