Our story of Kayle
In the 1890s a group of Scottish writers, J. M. Barrie among them, wrote warm stories of village life, and a critic dismissed them as the Kailyard school — kailyard being the Scots word for a cabbage patch, from a line about a bonnie brier bush in a kailyard. The name stuck. Kayle was not built from it; it came from Kyle and Kaylee and the easy sounds of its own day. But it shares a word with a humble garden, and that is not a bad thing to share.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kayle went to 13 girls in 2025, but Kaylee, Kailee and Caylee and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 1,431, which makes it the 234th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,651 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 1,123 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 123,636 for Kayle itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Charlette test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kayle's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Charlette climbed just as high around 1949, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Charlette's path sketches the road Kayle is walking now.
Kayle sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
