Where it comes from

The story of Kamden

William Camden, the Elizabethan antiquary whose Britannia was the first systematic survey of the British Isles, made the surname familiar; Camden, New Jersey, and Camden Town in London both carry it. As a given name it is American and recent: Camden entered the boys' top thousand in the 1990s and the top hundred in the 2010s, on the strength of the -den and -ton endings that dominated the period. Kamden with a K belongs to the respelling wave, and its girls' use follows the standard pattern by which a small share of a popular boys' surname name crosses over a few years after the peak.

the enclosed valley

Camden in Gloucestershire, now Chipping Campden, is recorded in Domesday and is generally read as Old English campa denu — a valley with enclosures or camps — or as cumb denu, a combe valley. The second element, denu, 'valley', is certain; the first is not. The London borough of Camden Town is a later and separate thing, named in the 1790s for the first Earl Camden, whose title came from Camden Place in Kent.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kamden went to 20 girls in 2025, but Camden is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 171, which makes it the 789th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,128 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 9,399 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 80,363 for Kamden itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Kam and Cam are both current short forms that work on either sex.
  • The pronunciation is obvious from the spelling.
  • The place-name element behind it is genuinely Old English.
What to consider
  • Camden, Kamden and Kamdyn all circulate and hers will be written as one of the others.
  • It is far more common on boys, so forms will often assume male.
  • The -den ending dates the name closely to the 2005-2025 window.
