Kaeleigh
Feminine
In 1985 a British band released a song called Kayleigh, about a girl the singer had not been able to forget. It went to the top of the charts across Europe, and registrars in Britain noticed the effect within a year. Very few names can be dated to a single record that precisely.

The story of Kaeleigh
The -eigh cluster the spelling ends in is one of the strangest things in English. It says the vowel of eight, the vowel of height, and the vowel of neighbor, all with the same four letters, and it exists only because scribes were writing down a consonant that stopped being pronounced six hundred years ago. Modern parents borrowed it wholesale, not for any of those sounds but for the look of the thing, and attached it to names that had never had it: Kaeleigh, Ryleigh, Haleigh, Bayleigh. The result is a spelling that no English rule predicts and that has to be given letter by letter for the whole of a life.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The song's title was made by joining two women's names, and it had no meaning before that. Attempts to attach one afterwards — an Irish word, a Hebrew word, a form of Kelly — do not hold up. What can be documented is the spelling family: Kayleigh, Kaleigh, Kaeleigh and Kayley are all versions of one invented sound.

The Orianna test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kaeleigh's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Orianna climbed just as high around 1911, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Orianna's path sketches the road Kaeleigh is walking now.
Kaeleigh sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Two syllables that anyone can say correctly on first hearing.
- Kay and Leigh both work as short forms and both are names on their own.
- It can be dated to a specific origin, which almost no modern coinage can.
- Eight letters for a two-syllable sound, and at least six spellings compete; it will be spelled out every single time.
- There is no meaning behind it, only a song, which is worth knowing before a child asks.
- It belongs to a narrow band of years and will date the bearer to them.
