Where it comes from

The story of Kadijah

The concentration is remarkable when you look at it directly. A handful of women in seventh-century Mecca account for a large share of women's naming across a quarter of the world's population, and they have done for longer than most European names have existed. The pattern holds through enormous linguistic variety: the same six names appear as Hatice and Ayse in Turkish, Fatou and Aissatou in Wolof, Siti Fatimah in Malay, Khadidja in French-speaking Africa. The spelling in American records depends on which of those roads a family came by, and the j itself moves: the Arabic letter is a hard j in most of the Arab world, a soft zh in the Levant, and a plain g in Egypt, where the name is said Khadiga.

Meaningscholars disagree

born early

The usual reading connects it with an Arabic root for premature birth, which is an odd meaning for so revered a name and is one reason it is disputed. Other proposals exist and none is settled. The name's weight comes entirely from its first bearer rather than from its etymology.

Kadijah sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1994, with 486 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kadijah went to 7 girls in 2025, but Khadija, Khadijah and Kadija are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 424, which makes it the 570th most-given girls’ name of the year — 11,362 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 3,791 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Kadijah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One of the most widely given women's names in the world, recognized on four continents.
  • Three short forms in genuine use rather than invented.
  • Three open syllables with a clear central stress.
What to consider
  • Khadija and Khadijah are the standard international spellings and this will be read as a variant.
  • The j is said three different ways across the Arabic-speaking world, all correct.
  • The etymology usually printed for it is disputed and unflattering.
