Saint Barbara was said to have been locked in a tower by her father and killed by him for her faith, after which he was struck by lightning — which made her the patron of anyone working with explosives, from gunners to miners, and put her name across Catholic Europe. English shortened the pronunciation long ago: nobody says three distinct syllables, and the middle vowel disappeared from speech centuries before anyone thought of removing it from the page. The Barbra spelling simply writes down what English had already done, which is why it looks radical and is not.
