Julious
Masculine
Julious takes a Roman name and gives it an English ending. Julius is the family name of one of the great clans of the Roman Republic; -ious is what English puts on the end of adjectives — curious, various, glorious. The two together produce a name that looks Latin to an English eye and looks wrong to a Latin one, which is a fair summary of how classical names were treated in nineteenth-century America.

The story of Julious
The gens Julia was one of the oldest patrician families in Rome, and its most famous member gave his name to a month, a calendar and a title that became the word for emperor in half of Europe. Julius passed into Christian use through early martyrs and popes, into English through the Renaissance, and into American naming as one of the classical names that nineteenth-century families reached for alongside Augustus, Cornelius and Marcus. The -ious spelling belongs to that American moment: it is what happens when a name is known from print rather than from Latin lessons, and the eye pattern-matches it to the adjectives it resembles.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Julius was a Roman clan name, and Roman clan names are mostly older than the language's own records of them. The two readings usually offered are a link to the Greek ioulos, meaning downy or soft-bearded, and a descent from Jove, the chief Roman god. Neither is established, and the family that carried the name told its own story about descent from Venus, which is politics rather than etymology.

The trade-off
- It is anchored to a name that has been continuously known in Europe for more than two thousand years.
- Jules is a strong, established short form that has aged well and works in several languages.
- The spelling is unusual without being unreadable — no one will hesitate over how to say it.
- Julius is the standard spelling, and this version will be corrected to it on virtually every document.
- The name carries a heavy classical association that a small boy has to grow into.
- Its meaning cannot be given honestly in one line, which disappoints the question everyone asks first.
