The story of Judi
The Book of Judith tells of a widow who saves her besieged city by walking into the enemy camp and killing its general — a scene painted more often than almost any other biblical subject. English used the name heavily after the Reformation, and Judy was its ordinary short form. The -i respelling belongs to the mid-century American wave that also gave Vicki, Kelli and Traci, and Judi peaked in the mid-1960s.
Meaning
woman of Judea, Jewish woman
From the Hebrew Yehudit, the feminine of Yehudi — a person of the tribe or kingdom of Judah. Genesis explains the tribal name from a verb meaning to praise. The chain from tribe to region to people to name is fully documented.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
