The story of Jordana
Crusaders returning from the Holy Land brought back water from the Jordan to baptize their children, and the river's name became a given name in Europe that way, for boys and girls both, from the twelfth century. It faded and returned in the twentieth century in enormous numbers in English-speaking countries. Jordana is the feminine form, used in Spanish, Portuguese and Hebrew, and it reached American records from all three directions.
Meaning
descending; flowing down
Hebrew Yarden, from yarad, to go down or descend. The river drops from the slopes of Hermon to the Dead Sea, which lies further below sea level than any other exposed water, so the name is a description rather than a metaphor.

Line the two peaks up, and Merita's path sketches the road Jordana is walking now.

The trade-off
- The meaning is a real river with a documented and unusual geography behind it.
- Dana and Jo are ready short forms and both are complete names.
- It works in Spanish, Portuguese, Hebrew and English households alike.
- Jordan is used for both sexes, so the feminine is sometimes assumed to be a correction of it.
- The middle vowel is said two ways depending on the language.
- It is also the name of a country, which brings its own set of associations.
