Jontae
Masculine
Jontae is given to both — 876 boys and 179 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
Jontae takes a complete name and gives it a final-stress ending. Jon is John clipped; -tae is the same device as -ay and -ae elsewhere, marking a stressed final syllable that English names almost never have. The result puts an old name into a rhythm English did not have available before the twentieth century.

From Yohanan to Jontae
Our story of Jontae
English is a front-stress language. Almost every native English name puts the weight on the first syllable, and the exceptions are borrowings — Renée, André, Michelle, Elaine. American naming in the second half of the twentieth century took that borrowed pattern and made it native, first by adopting the French names themselves, then by respelling them without accents, and finally by building new names on the pattern with no French in them at all. Jontae is at the third stage: an English name inside, a French-derived rhythm outside, and no French anywhere. That is a real change to the sound of American naming and it happened in about forty years. Jontae peaked in 1999.

Not established
Jon descends from John, Hebrew Yohanan, God is gracious — settled for John itself. The -tae ending has no source; it is a respelling of the French -té or -tée ending, or simply a construction on the model of Renae and Andrae. The compound carries no meaning forward.

Two syllables with the stress firmly on the second. Moving it forward gives JON-tay, which is a different name to the ear. The -tae ending is a long A, not two vowels.

Jontae's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Able climbed just as high around 1918, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Able's path sketches the road Jontae is walking now.
