Where it comes from

The story of Joni

Finnish adapted the European saints' names to its own phonology, giving Juhani, Jani, Jussi, Janne and Joni for John, all of them ordinary Finnish men's names. Meanwhile in North America Joni became a woman's name, principally through Roberta Joan Anderson, who recorded as Joni Mitchell from 1968; her albums made the spelling widely known. The male row in American records peaks in 1968, which is the same year, and it almost certainly holds Finnish-American families and a scattering of Jon-plus-i coinages rather than anything to do with the singer.

Meaning

God is gracious

Finnish Joni descends from Johannes, from Hebrew Yohanan, God is gracious, by way of the Scandinavian and Finnish forms. Separately, the American woman's Joni is a respelling of Joan or Joanne, which come from the same Hebrew original by a different route. Both routes share the meaning and nothing else.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Joni went to 12 boys in 2025, but Jonny and Jony are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 53, which makes it the 875th most-given boys’ name of the year — 5,928 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 32,228 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 142,340 for Joni itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
