The story of Jones
Wales held on to a patronymic system — ap Ioan, son of John — long after England had settled into fixed surnames, and when Welsh families finally adopted hereditary names in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Jones became one of the most widespread results. John itself had come to Britain through the Church, from the Greek Ioannes and the Hebrew Yohanan. Welsh emigration carried Jones to America, Australia and Patagonia, and it has been among the most numerous surnames in the English-speaking world ever since. Its move to the front of the name has been quieter and much later, part of the broad American habit of promoting family surnames to first names.
