Rohan
Masculine · “Ascending”
Rohan is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 12,102 boys against 49 girls since 1880.
Rohan reaches American birth records by more than one road — as a Sanskrit name for rising, as an anglicized Irish surname, and as the horse-country Tolkien drew on the map of Middle-earth. Two even syllables, spelled the way it sounds, with no silent letters to explain. It has held a place in the US record for decades without ever surging or vanishing.

Where it comes from
From Sanskrit rohana ('rising, ascending') to Rohan
The story of Rohan
The Sanskrit line is the oldest and the busiest: rohana, 'rising', a word at home in classical Sanskrit long before it settled into a personal name, and now common across Hindi- and Marathi-speaking India. From the twentieth century onward it traveled with Indian families to Britain, Australia, the Caribbean and the United States, where it needed no respelling to work. The Irish Rohan came by a different route — an anglicization of Ó Ruadháin, a surname carried out of Ireland in the nineteenth century and later used, as many Irish surnames were, as a first name. Tolkien's Rohan, the realm of the horse-lords in The Lord of the Rings, added a third association after the 1950s, and the films renewed it.

'Ascending, rising' in Sanskrit — though the same spelling arrives from other directions too
The Sanskrit reading is the best documented: rohana, 'rising, climbing, ascending', from the root ruh, 'to grow, to rise'. That is the source for the great majority of Rohans in India and in Indian families abroad. Separately, Rohan is an anglicization of the Irish surname Ó Ruadháin, built on ruadh, 'red' or 'red-haired' — the same root that gives Rowan. Separately again, Rohan is a place and noble family in Brittany, and the name Tolkien gave to the kingdom of the horse-lords. These are independent origins that happen to have met at one spelling, rather than competing theories about a single word.

The Donnell test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Rohan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Donnell climbed just as high around 1968, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Donnell's path sketches the road Rohan is walking now.
Rohan sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Spelled as it sounds and read correctly on first sight by most English speakers — two syllables, no silent letters, no variant spellings competing for it.
- Works without translation across India, Ireland, Britain, Australia and the United States, which is rare for a name this short.
- Long enough to stand on its own and short enough not to require a nickname, though Ro is there if it is wanted.
- Present in American records across decades without a fashion spike, so it is not tied to any one moment.
- Rowan is close in sound and spelling and is far more widely used in the US, including for girls. Expect a share of forms, rosters and emails to come back as Rowan.
- The Lord of the Rings connection is durable. Most bearers field the occasional horse-lords remark, which is easy company but does not go away.
- The vowel in the second syllable shifts between an American classroom and an Indian household. Nothing is wrong with either, but a child may hear their name said two slightly different ways every day.
