Brock begins as an English surname, documented across medieval and early modern England, drawn either from the badger word or from the word for a brook. A parallel Low German surname Brock, from a term for marshy ground, took root in northern Europe and traveled to America with German-speaking families, so the spelling arrived by more than one road. Its life as a first name belongs to the American habit of promoting surnames — the same move that gave boys Douglas and Chase — and it entered the US record early in the twentieth century, long before it had any real run. Its heavier use came much later, and the name is now easing back from that high point.
