Where it comes from

The story of Jonelle

English has repeatedly moved the boundary between two spoken words, and the results are permanent. An ekename, an additional name, became a nickname; a napron became an apron; an ewt became a newt; an orange was originally a naranj. The same thing happened inside affectionate address: mine Ellen became my Nellen and then Nell, mine Edward became Ned, mine Ann became Nan, mine Oliver became Noll. Speakers were not making errors so much as re-dividing a sound stream that carries no gaps, which is what listeners always have to do. Nell then became a name in its own right, and Jonelle joins it to Jo in the standard American way, so the second half of this name is a piece of medieval mishearing preserved intact.

Hebrew Yohanan, Yah is gracious

Jonelle joins Jo, from Joanna or Josephine, to the -elle or Nell ending. Nell itself came from Ellen and Eleanor by the transfer of an n from the possessive mine. The compound is an American formation; its peak is 1981.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Jo, Nell and Elle are three short forms in three very different styles.
  • Two syllables with the weight at the end.
  • Both halves are old and well documented.
What to consider
  • Janelle is more common and will be substituted.
  • The unstressed first vowel makes the spelling hard to guess.
  • The 1981 peak dates it closely.
