Our story of Jian
Ours, offered as ours. The jian sword — straight, double-edged, light — is called the gentleman of weapons in Chinese tradition, as against the heavier single-edged dao. It is the sword of scholars and of Taoist ritual, and it appears in poetry far more than on battlefields. Whether a particular Jian is named for that, for building, or for health is a question only the characters can answer, and pinyin throws them away.
Meaningscholars disagree
strong; or to build; or a sword
Romanised Chinese collapses characters that are entirely different words. Jian can be jiàn 健, healthy and vigorous, jiàn 建, to establish or build, or jiàn 剑, the double-edged sword. The tone and character carry the meaning; the spelling does not.

About 1 boy in 33,492 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 77,640 for Jian itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Ramzy test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jian's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ramzy climbed just as high around 1987, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ramzy's path sketches the road Jian is walking now.
Jian sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
