Where it comes from

The story of Nels

Nicholas was one of the great names of European Christianity, and Scandinavia contracted it heavily — Nils in Sweden and Norway, Niels in Denmark. The great Scandinavian emigration to the American Midwest in the nineteenth century brought Nels in large numbers, where it appears in the registers as the standard American spelling and peaked around 1885.

Meaning

victory of the people

Through Nils and Nicholas, from the Greek Nikolaos — nike, 'victory', and laos, 'people'. Both elements are ordinary Greek words and the compound is undisputed. Scandinavian contracted Nikolaus to Nils and Nels.
