Where it comes from

Our story of Elroy

Ours, offered as ours. English does this repeatedly with borrowed words: it takes the foreign article along with the noun and forgets it is there. Alligator is el lagarto, the lizard. Alcohol, algebra and alchemy all carry the Arabic al. Leroy is le roi, the king. Then Elroy respells the article as though it were an El- prefix, which adds a second layer of forgetting to the first.

Meaning

the king

From French le roi, the king; the surname Leroy was a byname for someone who played a king in a pageant or behaved like one. Elroy is a respelling that reanalyses the l as part of an El- opening.

Elroy sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1922, with 192 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled meaning that is transparent once the article is pointed out.
  • Roy is a complete short form with its own long record.
  • Read correctly on sight by every English speaker.
What to consider
  • Leroy is the more common form and will be assumed.
  • It is strongly associated with one mid-century American generation.
  • The El- is a swallowed French article, not a Hebrew element.
