Jeremie
Masculine · “Hebrew”
Jeremie is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 4,301 boys against 70 girls since 1880.
Jeremie is the French Jérémie, and the prophet behind it has a name that is genuinely hard to translate. Yirmeyahu joins a verb whose sense is disputed — to loosen, to exalt, or to hurl — to the divine name, so the whole is something like Yah loosens, or Yah exalts, and scholars have not agreed which.

The story of Jeremie
Jeremiah is the prophet of the fall of Jerusalem, and the length and grief of his book gave English the word jeremiad for a prolonged lament. The name entered European use everywhere Christianity went; French made Jérémie, Spanish Jeremías, and English kept Jeremiah alongside the shorter Jeremy, which came in through medieval Latin Jeremias. Jeremie's 1976 American peak sits at the height of Jeremy's own great run, and the spelling reads as either the French form or a respelling depending on the family.

Hebrew, disputed: "Yahweh will exalt" or "Yahweh loosens"
From Yirmeyahu, in which yahu is the divine name and the first element is from a root r-m-h or r-w-m. The readings proposed include exalt, loosen or set free, and appoint. The prophet's own book gives no gloss. This is one of the better-known biblical names whose meaning is genuinely unsettled.

The Boyce test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jeremie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Boyce climbed just as high around 1938, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Boyce's path sketches the road Jeremie is walking now.
Jeremie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
