Jenner
Masculine · “English "engineer”
Jenner is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 547 boys against 15 girls since 1880.
Jenner is an occupational surname, and the occupation is one nobody has heard of. A jenner was a maker of engines — the medieval word covered siege machines, mills and mechanical contrivances generally — so the surname means something close to engineer, three centuries before the modern word existed.

The story of Jenner
The surname's most famous bearer is Edward Jenner, the Gloucestershire physician who demonstrated in 1796 that cowpox inoculation protected against smallpox — the beginning of vaccination, and the word vaccine itself comes from his use of the Latin for cow. That is one of the largest single contributions to human survival on record. The name's American appearance as a given name, peaking in 2011, has a quite separate cause in the surname's celebrity visibility during those years.

English "engineer, maker of machines"
The usual derivation is from Middle English ginnour or engignour, a maker of engines, from Old French engigneor and Latin ingeniator — the same root as ingenious and engine. A second derivation takes it as a form of Janner or from a personal name. The engineer reading is the better supported.

The Joaquim test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jenner's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Joaquim climbed just as high around 1940, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Joaquim's path sketches the road Jenner is walking now.
