Jenessa
Feminine
Vanessa was invented in 1713 by Jonathan Swift. He made it for Esther Vanhomrigh by taking Van from her surname and Essa from a pet form of Esther, and published it in a poem. Three centuries later the ending he created is a productive American suffix, and Jenessa is one of the names built on it.

Our story of Jenessa
Our reading is that Vanessa is one of the very few names in English with a named author, a date and a documented method, and that its ending is now doing work Swift never imagined. He wrote Cadenus and Vanessa around 1713 and it was published in 1726; the name was his private construction for a woman he corresponded with for years. It entered general use in the nineteenth century, became substantial in the twentieth, and by the 1980s was large enough that its ending detached. Once detached it attaches freely: Janessa, Jenessa, Danessa, Tenessa. The same thing happened to Aaliyah's ending and to Sean, and it is the ordinary way an element enters a naming system. What makes this case unusual is that we can name the man who made the original and the year he made it, which is true of almost nothing else in the language.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Jenessa joins the Jen stem, from Jennifer, to the -essa ending. That ending descends from Vanessa, a name Swift coined in 1713 from the surname and pet name of Esther Vanhomrigh. Neither element carries an inherited meaning in the compound, and Jenessa is not attested before the twentieth century. It peaks in 1991.

The Lawrence test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jenessa's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lawrence climbed just as high around 1903, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lawrence's path sketches the road Jenessa is walking now.
Jenessa sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
