Jenae
Feminine · “Hebrew "Yahweh is gracious”
Jean crossed both a language and a sex. In France Jean is a man's name — the French form of John — and in Scotland and England Jean became a woman's, through the separate feminine Jehanne. Names built on it in America, Jenae among them, inherit the female line.

The story of Jenae
The split happened in the Middle Ages and the two branches never rejoined. Old French had Jehan for men and Jehanne for women; English took both, and Jehanne gave Joan, the standard English women's name of the medieval period, and later Jane. Scotland took the same feminine as Jean, which stayed common there for centuries. Meanwhile French kept Jean firmly masculine, which is why Jean-Paul and Jean-Luc are men and an English speaker's first instinct is wrong. American naming from the 1960s built on the female line — Jeanne, Jenae, Janae, Jenay — with a final stress that is French in shape and American in use. Jenae peaks in 1991.

Hebrew "Yahweh is gracious", by way of the French feminine
The base is John, from Hebrew Yohanan. French Jean is masculine; the feminine Jehanne gave English Jane, Joan and Scottish Jean. Jenae is an American formation on Jean or Jenny with a stressed -ae ending, which carries no meaning and represents a long a sound. Whether a given family intended the French or the English line cannot be recovered.

Two syllables, stress on the second, with the -ae said as a long a. It is not JEN-ay; the weight falls on the ending, which is what distinguishes the name from Jenna.
