The story of Jeffry
Geoffrey came to England with the Normans and became a standard medieval name — Geoffrey Chaucer and Geoffrey of Monmouth both wrote themselves into English literature. The Jeffrey spelling was an English simplification, and Jeffry a further one. American use rose enormously in the mid-twentieth century, and Jeffry peaked around 1962.

peace of the land, or of the traveler, or of the pledge
The second element is the Germanic frid, 'peace', and is undisputed. The first is not: gawia, 'territory'; walah, 'stranger' or 'traveler'; or gisil, 'pledge'. Medieval Latin scribes conflated Godfrey with Geoffrey too, which added a fourth possibility.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Houston test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jeffry's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Houston climbed just as high around 1901, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Houston's path sketches the road Jeffry is walking now.
