Where it comes from

The story of Jeana

Medieval Europe named cloths after the cities that made them, and the names survived long after the trade moved: muslin from Mosul, damask from Damascus, cambric from Cambrai, calico from Calicut, denim from serge de Nimes, and jean from Genoa, which Middle English rendered as Gene or Jene. When Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis patented riveted work trousers in 1873 they used both fabrics, and the older word eventually attached to the garment. The girl's name arrived by an entirely different road: French Jehanne gave Jean in Scotland and northern England, where it was a leading name for centuries, and America added the -a to make Jeana and Jeanna. Two histories, one spelling, no connection at all.

Meaning

Hebrew Yohanan, Yah is gracious

Jeana is an extended form of Jean, the English feminine taken from French Jehanne, itself the feminine of Jehan, John. The cloth called jean is unrelated in origin, from Genoa, though the two words are now spelled identically. The peak is 1971.

Jeana sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1971, with 231 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jeana went to 9 girls in 2025, but Jeanna is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 28, which makes it the 932nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,175 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 57,402 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 178,585 for Jeana itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
