Where it comes from

The story of Jasmyn

Jasmine came into English use as a flower-name in the nineteenth century, when Victorian families were naming daughters Rose, Lily, Violet and Ivy, but it stayed uncommon for a hundred years afterwards. It became widely given in the United States in the nineteen-eighties and nineties, and the respellings arrived with the popularity, as they always do: Jazmine, Jasmyn, Jazmyn and Jasmin all writing the same word. The y in this one belongs to the same American habit that produced Kaitlyn and Alysia.

Meaning

the jasmine flower

Persian yasamin, the jasmine plant, through Arabic yasmin and French jasmin. The plant reached Europe from Persia and India along with its name, which is why almost every European language says a version of the same word.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jasmyn went to 28 girls in 2025, but Jazmin, Jasmin and Jazmyn and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 668, which makes it the 426th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,332 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 2,406 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 57,402 for Jasmyn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is a plant everyone can picture and smell, which very few names manage.
  • The same word is a name in Arabic, Persian, Turkish, French and Spanish, so it crosses borders intact.
  • Jas and Jazzy are ready short forms of different registers.
What to consider
  • Jasmine is the standard English spelling; this one will be corrected constantly.
  • Jazmine, Jazmyn and Jasmyn are all in circulation, so written confusion is certain.
  • The name is strongly attached to an animated princess, which is charm to some children and noise to others.
