Where it comes from

The story of Jasmin

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia, Jasmin is an ordinary boy's name, worn by footballers and basketball coaches, while Germany and English-speaking countries give it to girls. In southwestern France, Jacques Boé, a hairdresser in Agen, wrote poems in Gascon, the old language of his region, under the name Jasmin; crowds came to hear him recite, and Longfellow translated his poem about a blind village girl into English.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jasmin went to 155 girls in 2025, but Jazmin, Jazmyn and Jasmyn and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 668, which makes it the 426th most-given girls’ name of the year — 980 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 2,406 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 10,369 for Jasmin itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
