Where it comes from

The story of Jasmin

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia, Jasmin is an ordinary boy's name, worn by footballers and basketball coaches, while Germany and English-speaking countries give it to girls. In southwestern France, Jacques Boé, a hairdresser in Agen, wrote poems in Gascon, the old language of his region, under the name Jasmin; crowds came to hear him recite, and Longfellow translated his poem about a blind village girl into English.

Jasmin sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1989, with 38 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Jasmin sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A flower name everyone recognizes.
  • Simpler to spell than Jasmine.
  • Used across many countries.
What to consider
  • Many will add an e.
  • In the Balkans it is a boy's name.
  • The spelling is recorded for a few boys in America, but nearly every Jasmin here is a girl.
