Where it comes from

Our story of Jaslynn

Our story of Jaslynn begins with a plant that traveled with its name. Jasmine is native to Persia and the Himalaya, and when it moved west the word moved with it — yasmin into Arabic, into Spanish and French, into English — which is why the flower and the word arrived together and neither had to be translated. That is rarer than it sounds; most borrowed plants got local names instead. The Jas- at the front of this name is the front of that word, and the -lynn behind it is an American suffix with no history at all. A Persian shrub and a Welsh lake, joined last week.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Jasmine is Persian yasmin, the flowering shrub, which reached English through Arabic and French along with the plant. That reading is documented. The -lynn ending is Welsh llyn, 'lake', by way of the English name Lynn, and works here as a general suffix. Whether Jaslynn was built from Jasmine or assembled on the Jas- and -lynn shapes in current use is not recorded.

Jaslynn sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2010, with 145 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jaslynn went to 53 girls in 2025, but Jazlyn, Jaslyn and Jazlynn and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 1,278, which makes it the 254th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,813 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 1,258 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 30,326 for Jaslynn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
