The story of Nadyne
Nadezhda Durova ran away from home in 1806 dressed as a boy, enlisted in a Russian cavalry regiment and served for ten years, fighting in the campaigns against Napoleon; the tsar learned the truth and let her keep serving, and her memoirs, The Cavalry Maiden, are still read. In South Africa Nadine Gordimer wrote novels about life under apartheid, several of which the government banned; she won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1991. Nadyne, with its y, is an American spelling of the early twentieth century.
