Jarom
Masculine
Jarom comes from one book, and the book is American. It is the name of the writer of a single short chapter of the Book of Mormon — a man who says almost nothing about himself and hands the record on. A name with that narrow a source travels only where the book travels, which is why it belongs so clearly to the Mountain West.

The story of Jarom
The Book of Mormon was published in upstate New York in 1830 and contains a one-chapter book attributed to Jarom, son of Enos. When Latter-day Saint families moved west and built communities in Utah, Idaho and Arizona, they drew on that text for names the way earlier American Protestants drew on the Hebrew Bible — Nephi, Alma, Moroni, Lehi, Jarom. Most of those stayed inside the community. Jarom is one of the few that is short enough and English enough in sound to pass unremarked outside it, which is why it turns up on rosters in the Southwest and almost nowhere else.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The text that supplies the name supplies no meaning for it. Readers looking for one point to the Hebrew root rum, to be high or lifted up, which would give something along the lines of he will be exalted — but that is a reading of the name's shape, not a documented derivation, and it should not be presented as settled.
Pronouncing Jarom
JAIR-um
Two syllables, stress on the first, with the second reduced almost to a hum. That is the saying used in the communities where the name is at home; readers meeting it cold sometimes try juh-ROM, which is not how anyone who has the name says it.

The Kerby test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jarom's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kerby climbed just as high around 1961, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kerby's path sketches the road Jarom is walking now.
Jarom sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Five letters, two syllables, and no competing spellings anywhere — what is written is what everyone writes.
- It is unusual without being difficult, which is a narrow and useful gap for a name to sit in.
- Within the communities that know it, the name is instantly legible and needs no introduction.
- It reads as a marker of one particular faith to anyone who recognizes it, and that is a signal a family should weigh deliberately rather than discover later.
- Outside those communities it is heard as Jerome, and the correction is constant.
- There is no established short form, so a boy who wants an everyday name has to make one up or use his initial.
