Spanish spells the k sound with qu, and qu can only be followed by e or i. That is a hard rule, and it is why queso, quien and quince are spelled as they are and why Spanish has no qua or quo. Jaquelin obeys it. The French Jacqueline, with its cq, does not exist in Spanish orthography at all.

Where it comes from

The story of Jaquelin

Spanish orthography is unusually strict about the k sound and the strictness is old. The letter k itself is used almost only in foreign words. The sound is written c before a, o and u, and qu before e and i, and there are no exceptions in native vocabulary: casa, cosa, cuna, queso, quilo. That means the French cq of Jacqueline is impossible, and a Spanish writer rendering the name has to choose qu and drop a letter. The same rule reshapes every borrowed name with a hard c before a front vowel. It also means Spanish readers find English spelling genuinely unpredictable in this area, since English writes the same sound as c, k, ck, ch, qu and que depending on the word's history rather than on any rule. Spanish reformed; English did not.

Meaning

Hebrew Yaakov, heel or supplanter

Jacqueline is the French feminine of Jacques, from Latin Iacomus, a late variant of Iacobus, from Hebrew Yaakov, the name of the patriarch Jacob. The Genesis text connects it to a word for a heel and to a verb meaning to supplant, both as wordplay. Jaquelin is the Spanish spelling, following Spanish rules for the k sound. It peaks in the American data in 2000.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jaquelin went to 12 girls in 2025, but Jacquelyn, Jacquelynn and Jacquelin and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 119, which makes it the 841st most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,521 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 13,506 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 133,939 for Jaquelin itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
