A silent e is one of the cheapest tools in English spelling and one of the most effective. Joy is a common noun; Joye is a name. Nothing about the sound changes, and everything about how the word is read on a page does — which is the point, and which is also how Anne, Elle and Faye all came about.

Where it comes from

The story of Joye

Joy entered English use as a name in the seventeenth century, part of the crop of virtue and quality names the Reformation produced, and it stayed in modest use ever after. The e-spelling appears in American records from the early twentieth century and rises between the wars, which is exactly when American naming was at its most enthusiastic about small ornamental additions. It is one of the few word-names where the ornament serves an obvious purpose: it tells a reader, instantly, that this is a person and not a feeling.

Meaning

joy, gladness

The English noun, borrowed from the Old French joie after the Norman Conquest and going back to the Latin gaudium. Before the Conquest English had its own word for the feeling; the French one displaced it, which is what happened to a great deal of English vocabulary about pleasure and fine feeling.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Joye went to 6 girls in 2025, but Joie is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 67, which makes it the 893rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 12,315 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 23,989 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 267,878 for Joye itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable and four letters — it sits well before almost any surname.
  • The word behind it is plain English, so the meaning needs no explaining.
  • The e distinguishes it in writing from a very common noun, which is a real advantage.
  • It is recorded for boys as well as girls, though nearly all are girls.
What to consider
  • Joy without the e is far commoner and will be written instead constantly.
  • The e is silent, so nobody learns the spelling by hearing it.
  • It belongs to an older American generation and carries that flavor.
