The Mackenzies held Kintail on the west coast and became one of the great Highland families, eventually Earls of Seaforth. The surname reached America with Scottish emigration and moved to the front of the name in the twentieth century. Its crossing to girls in the late 1970s was unusually rapid and is generally traced to one visible young actress carrying the name; whatever the cause, the record shows it.
