The story of Nicky
The saint's bones were stolen, and the theft is documented. In the eleventh century a party of merchants from Bari sailed to the town in Asia Minor where he was buried, broke into the tomb, and carried the relics home ahead of a rival expedition from Venice that had the same idea. The townspeople objected; the merchants sailed anyway. Bari built a basilica for them that is still there and still a pilgrimage site, and the anniversary of the arrival is a civic festival. Relic theft of this kind was common enough in the period to have its own literature and its own justifications, the usual one being that the saint had clearly wanted to move.

Fashion outlook
Nicky sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, warm and completely unisex without straining for it.
- The full name behind it is among the most widely used in the world.
- The spelling and the sound agree with nothing to explain.
- It reads as a short form to many people even when it is the legal name.
- Its peak generation is far enough back to date the name for some ears.
- The record holds girls as well, and the girl is the smaller side.
