Jacob's name is a joke the text makes twice. He is born gripping his brother's heel, and the narrator says so; then Esau, robbed of the blessing, asks whether he is not rightly named Jacob, for he has supplanted me twice. Jamison means son of James, and James is Jacob, so the name descends from a pun about grabbing.

The story of Jamison
Biblical name explanations are literary rather than linguistic and the Jacob passages are the clearest case. At the birth, the second twin comes out holding the first one's heel, and the narrator names him for it. At the theft of the blessing, Esau makes the same connection in anger with a different verb from the same root, meaning to supplant. Then at the Jabbok the name is changed to Israel and explained again, as one who strives with God. Three explanations, all puns, none of them what a modern lexicographer would call an etymology. The likeliest original form is a shortened theophoric name, Yaaqov-el, of the kind common across the ancient Near East, meaning something like may God protect. The text is not interested in that. It is interested in what the name can be made to say about the man.

Hebrew Yaakov, heel or supplanter
Jamison is a patronymic surname, son of James. James descends from Latin Iacomus, a late variant of Iacobus, from Hebrew Yaakov. The Genesis text connects the name to aqev, a heel, and to the verb aqav, to supplant or overreach, but both are wordplay rather than established etymology; the name may originally have contained a divine element and meant may God protect. It peaks for girls in 2005.
