Our story of Jamarcus
Ours, offered as ours. Romans used a startlingly small set of first names — about seventeen in common use, of which Marcus was one — and distinguished people by family and branch names instead. Marcus belonged to Cicero, to Marcus Aurelius, to Mark Antony. American naming attached Ja- to it in the 1970s and 1980s, which put one of the oldest continuously used names in Europe behind a prefix invented within living memory.

of Mars
Marcus is documented: one of the small set of Roman praenomina, generally derived from Mars, the god of war and, earlier, of agriculture. The Ja- prefix belongs to twentieth-century American naming and carries no meaning of its own.
